Great Games to Play Over Zoom

We do miss family. Thankfully, the likes of Zoom and other video calling apps, quickly emerged at the start of Lockdown 1. By now though, I’m guessing that you’re probably trying to avoid your 264th Zoom quiz, and feeling like there’s not much to do to connect with your family and friends right now.

Well, if that’s true, don’t worry, I got your back. There’s plenty more games, puzzles, and activities you can do that work perfectly with group Zoom calls. Here’s a few I’ve found…

Family Classics

There’s nothing wrong with a good old family favourite which is why I had to mention these classic games that would be perfect for a zoom family game night.

Charades

Charades are not just for Christmas parties! Zoom is a great platform for this family favourite to be played as it doesn’t require any extra materials other than your imagination! But if you’re feeling uncreative there’s even a charade word generator you can use that chooses for you. The generator varies from ‘easy’ to ‘very hard’, has categories, and popular culture topics for you to choose from.

Card Games

Weekends away in the caravan playing card games with the grandparents…those were the days! Soon those days will be back but in the meantime, you can play your favourite card games virtually on Zoom using the PlayingCards website! The website allows you to pick from a number of games, from Match-Up (Pairs) and Crazy Eights to Go Fish and more! Invite as many members to the game as you like using the multiplayer link.

Skribbl

Get the arts and crafts flowing using Skribbl, a fun drawing and guessing game that can be played with your friends and family using the website link below and Zoom. After setting up a private room, each player will pick a word from the list provided and has 80 seconds to sketch it, the other players will guess by typing in the chat and the fastest player to guess wins the points, simple!

Name, Place, Animal, Thing

This fun game works great over zoom, all that’s needed is the chatbox! Pick a letter at random then each player has to list a famous person’s name, a place, an animal, and a thing that begins with that letter. The first person to type them into the Zoom chat wins the round!

Chess

If this is a game you’re into, then you’re lucky as this ones very easy to play over Zoom. Each grab a chess board, and move yours and their pieces to match… you probably worked that one out already didn’t you though?

Cook Off!

Put that frozen ready meal back in the freezer and get your aprons on! A family cooking session is bound to be a barrel of laughs and loads of fun! Each week, one member of the family picks a recipe either online or from a cookbook, then gives everyone enough time to gather the ingredients, set a time and date, and get cooking! In the time everything takes to cook you could try out one of the other family activities mentioned in this article!

A fun recipe to try is this easy and tasty Spaghetti Bolognese tutorial by Kylee Cooks.

Virtual Escape Rooms

One of the most popular attractions to emerge in the last few years has been Escape Rooms. While they’re closed for now, many of them have provided online virtual games based on popular themes like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Haunted Mansions. All that’s needed for this to work over Zoom is for one member to share their screen (with the escape room loaded) with the rest of the group.  It’s also a great way to support local businesses right now!

One such business called ‘Take The Exit’ based in Hull, has a number of online games you can book together for just £5.99 per game!

Diagon Ally

Harry Potter fans will already recognise from the name, that this online escape room is based on the popular fantasy series. It’s family-friendly and takes place in the magical Diagon Alley.

The Ring of Power

Set in Middle Earth, this online escape game is another family-friendly activity you can play together over Zoom. You need to solve puzzles to progress and escape with the one ring to rule them all!

Nostromo: Odyssey

Another family-friendly game where you must solve puzzles to escape the Nostromo spaceship after being abducted.

The Mansion Incident

After your sister goes missing, you take it upon yourself to investigate her employers – The Mikami family at their mansion. With rumours of the mansion being haunted, the only way to get through it is thinking of poor Motoko. Solve the puzzles to find out what’s happened before it’s too late!

You can book all of these online escape games and a few others on the Take The Exit website.
