Hull City Council Respond to Traffic Problems Across the City

Hull City Council have responded to the recent traffic problems on roads across Hull. Last week, it was reported that Hull was the worst city in the UK for congestion on the roads, but the council have now explained why the network is facing such problems at the moment.

“Hull is in the midst of a huge transformation to its transport system, with major works taking place across the city, including the A63, Stoneferry Corridor and utility repairs.

“The current works are being undertaken by a number of organisations in addition to Hull City Council, including Highways England, Northern Gas Network and Northern Powergrid, and include emergency repairs. These are works which the Council has to permit and are essential to maintaining crucial electricity and gas supplies to many residents and businesses across the city.

“The local authority did undertake the majority of our multi-million pound road improvement schemes during the lockdown period, in order to minimise the impact on traffic once the lockdown restrictions began to ease. One of these schemes, involving work to Diadem roundabout to Ganstead roundabout in Holderness Road, [completed at the end of last week].

“We do understand the frustrations about the impact of these works and apologise for the inconvenience they are causing. Whilst we appreciate it is very difficult, motorists are asked to stagger journey times if they can, allow longer for travel across the city and bear with us as these essential works take place to ensure public safety and improve Hull’s roads in the long-term.”

Meanwhile, works to reduce the number of potholes on Hull’s roads will begin next month, which will cause further disruption to motorists temporarily, but will help in the long term.

Hull City Council will be laying a specialist thin surface treatment called micro surfacing to 26 sections of road starting on Tuesday 4 May.

A total of 38,604 square-meters of road space will be resurfaced and this will require some road closures.

Where this is the case, advance warning signs will be in place and residents in the affected areas will be informed via letter drops.

Andy Bell, head of highways infrastructure at Hull City Council said: “We are planning to undertake these works as quickly as we can but, because the resurfacing is being undertaken across a number of streets, this can result in the programme changing across the length of the works, especially if parked cars are not removed. This can often cause delays, which means the area needs to revisited at a later date, so we ask residents to assist us in ensuring their cars are moved if they are notified that this will be necessary.

“The timetable can also be affected by other issues, including bad weather and material supplies, which can sometimes cause disruption to the programme.

“We apologise in advance for any disruption caused during the period of these works, and asks that motorists are patient whilst we carry out these essential repairs which will significantly improve the quality of a number of roads in the city.”

The work will be carried out by Colas Group.
