What's it about?
We are Back at the Backroom, our beautiful new(ish) venue and now with a regular night of the second Thursday of every month. Once again we have a brilliant headline act for you; this time we have another CCC first appearance for Mike Newall.
Mike’s timing is the envy of performers with ten times the experience and is proof that some people are just funny. His laconic style and demeanour is possible because of the strength of material and on stage presence.
A gentle, amiable power-house of a comic, Mike’s timing is the envy of performers with ten times the experience and is living proof that you can’t learn to be funny, some people just are. Since making his debut in 2003, he has toured the country honing his skills and is now a force to be reckoned with. A talent who audiences, colleagues and industry-types alike are really sitting up and taking notice of, Mike Newall is the future of the Manchester scene, as cheering crowds from Penzance to Inverness will happily testify.
In 2010 he did his first Edinburgh Fringe Show, ‘Mr Famous’. The Scotsman newspaper reviewed the show and said ‘…his hair is immaculate.’ They also said ‘perfectly crafted’ and ‘pin sharp’ but let’s not dwell on that. He returned to Edinburgh in 2011 with a new show, ‘Mike Newall’s Get Better Box’. That same year, he headlined the prestigious ‘Big Value Comedy’ early show. In September 2012 he joined Alun Cochrane on tour as his support act which ran until June 2013 and in the same year took another show ‘Six Weddings’ to the Edinburgh Festival. He’s currently working on his newest show ‘High On Gravy’.
‘Storytelling comes easy and the laughs are sharp…off-beat surreal and clever observations’ The Edinburgh Reporter
‘well-crafted jokes, great call-backs and a wonderfully dry delivery’ Three Weeks
‘There’s something strangely elegiac about these modest little insights into his life that make them more than just average observational comedy… Impressive stuff’ Chortle
“…Perfectly crafted … Pin sharp, his control is deft and his hair is immaculate.” The Scotsman
Plus the usual support: a professional opener and two up and coming acts in the middle section. This month’s opening act is Pete Phillipson, a brilliant comedian who performed at the first ever Cottingham Comedy Club back in 2016.
And hosting proceedings is everyone’s second favourite compere, known to some as The Man, The Myth, The Legend, and to many more as The Other One Who Sometimes Does The Compere Thing But Isn’t Quite Jed Salisbury: it’s Stone Cold Rich Austin.
Doors open 7:30pm, show starts 8:00pm Tickets £10 in advance or £12 on the door (£8 with NUS / NHS or What’s On Hub card) Tickets available at HullBoxOffice.com or to collect from the venue itself on the night: The Back Room, 175a Hallgate, Cottingham HU16 4BB (please message us on FB or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve tickets to purchase on the night at the advance rate)
Cottingham Comedy Club, the village’s only comedy venue, provides an unique comedy experience in many ways. This intimate club gets you up close and personal with the acts, many of whom are breaking through into TV, or are established acts from the UK and international comedy circuit. We are a welcoming venue and we have a dedicated room for the comedy, with regular breaks between the acts for you to lubricate your throats with laughter juice. With four acts and a compere it’s great value for money at less than £2 per comedian. We think it’s the most fun you can have with friends on a midweek night out.
