I have been so excited about this show coming to Hull New Theatre and last night I joined a packed house to watch the bootylicious Kinky Boots. This production has played in the West End until recently so i was not surprised that my high expectations were met.
The musical is about Price and Sons who are Northampton shoe makers. Business is bad due to new and cheaper production processes in Eastern Europe. Charlie, a descendant of the founders, goes off to London with his girlfriend as he has no interest in the family business. However whilst there, he comes across Lola – a lady in distress. Only she is not a lady in distress and, as well as sorting out her muggers, she accidentally knocks out Charlie.
Charlie comes to in Lola’s dressing room. Lola, magnificent Lola, is a drag queen with a broken heel and a bevvy of Angels (all of whom are fantastic singers and dancers). Being a shoemaker Charlie offers to fix the heel and they discuss shoes.
Charlie has to return to Northampton because of the death of his father. He returns to find the shoes are not selling and the factory is going under. During his process of giving notice to the workers, he is told not to give in. He should diversify. That’s when it hits him; he can use the factory to make boots and shoes, with heels for drag queens.
So that is the basic story, what was the production like? It was absolutely fantastic.  Dragtastic, Spangleicious, high heel heaven. I loved it from start to finish.
Charlie (Joel Harper Jackson) was charming and under the thumb of Nicola (Charlie Allen), who excellently played the money and career oriented girlfriend. The factory staff were all slick, great actors and singers. Don (Demitri Lampra) had us in stitches.
I have to say everyone was totally out done by Lola and the Angels. Lola played by Kayi Ushi just stole the show. Such a huge personality, each time Lola steps on stage, you just follow her every move. The Angels were fabulous and so full of presence on stage.
The songs are not as well known as most musicals but they will have your feet tapping. You will just love “The most beautiful thing in the world” (A shoe, what else?), “Sex is in the heel” just before the interval is superb, fast beat, funny lyrics (by Cyndi Lauper) and fast moving choreography. The audience went into the interval buzzing. The second half started a little slowly after such a rip roaring end to the first; however it livened up with “What a woman wants”.
The cast finished up with “Raise you up/Just be” which was a fantastic and uplifting end.  To see the whole cast in Kinky Boots of wonderful and colourful designs was superb. The audience loved it. There was a standing ovation at the end and we all left the auditorium on a high.

This show a 5 star production. It’s fantastic, it’s fun, there’s a lot going on and the energy of the cast is infectious.  We left on a high and I want to see this show again.
