About HMP Hull
HM Prison Hull was opened in 1870 to hold both men and women, but has subsequently undergone changing roles as a military prison, civil defence depot, a male borstal and a maximum security dispersal prison. Just outside the main prison is an exhibition room opened in 2011 entitled Within These Walls. The exhibition had its genesis when curator Rob Nicholson was given a book registering all the executions at the jail (1902-1934) and part of the displays feature biographical details of these people. But equally fascinating are the original plans for the prison, complete with pictures of the treadmill (which prisoners were expected to drive by walking on), plans and photos from its temporary transformation in 1942 into a fire station and also a collection of articles manufactured within prisons ranging from attractive scrimshaw carvings through to other implements and old weapons.
