The first glimpse of John Godber’s new comedy, The Kings of Hull, has been revealed with the release of a series of production images of the play.
Commissioned for Hull UK City of Culture 2017, the show receives its world premiere at the newly reopened Hull New Theatre tonight (Wednesday, September 27).
Written and directed by Godber, The Kings of Hull tells the remarkable story of the King family across three generations.
From life on the docks, to Hull prison, a lottery win and success in the coal trade; this is a family whose sons and daughters are struggling to cope in a changing world.
The Kings are a family bonded by love but divided by rugby, a river and sibling rivalry. Join us at their Golden Wedding, before the gloves come off; for a celebration of life in town, from the 1960s through to Brexit and beyond.
Whether it’s love, hate, success or failure, the Kings always come out fighting.
The cast includes former Emmerdale actor Martin Barrass, Hull-born Pippa Fulton – a former BBC Fame Academy contestant and Jane Thornton, an actor and playwright who is married to Godber.
Jane recently wrote and directed the highly-acclaimed Ocho, about eight men from Hull who went to fight in the Spanish Civil War, and some of the young actors involved in this project will also star in The Kings of Hull.
This expansive and hilariously irreverent production features the music of Ruby and the Vinyl too.
Tickets for The Kings of Hull which opens at Hull New Theatre on Wednesday, September 27 until Saturday, October 7 are from £16.50 with concessions available. There will be a signed performance on Wednesday, October 4 at 7.30pm.
