Nothing beats a Sunday roast, and it’s even better if you don’t have to do the cooking (or the washing up). There are lots of great restaurants across Hull & East Yorkshire offering a wonderfully cooked Sunday roast; whether you’re a vegetable fanatic, a potato piler, a gravy drowner, or a meat connoisseur.

We asked our readers to tell us about their favourite place to get a delicious Sunday dinner and whilst some practical jokers told us that their houses served the best roast, some of our fans came up with some great suggestions. So with their recommendations, our own experience and a great deal of research, we’ve created our ultimate Top 10 Sunday Roasts in Hull & East Yorkshire.

The Minerva

Nelson St, Hull Marina

Open Mon – Sat 11:30am – 11pm & Sun 12pm – 11pm

The Minerva is an historical pub, situated in Hull’s beautiful marina, with some of the best beer-battered fish and chips, and steak pie in the city.

Their Sunday lunch menu includes a choice of beef, pork, lamb or chicken served with all the trimmings. What are these trimmings you ask? We’re talking homemade Yorkshire puddings, ‘beef dripping’ crispy roast potatoes, mash, and a selection of freshly cooked veg.

There’s also a smaller portion available as well as a vegetarian roast which comes with 3 veggie sausages and a jug of vegetarian gravy.

They also offer an exceptional range of cask ales, fine wine, a bespoke Cocktail list, and continental beers for when you want to take the edge off. Head to the Minerva and find out why it won a Traveller’s Choice award on Tripadvisor this weekend.

The Old House

5 Scale Ln, Hull

Open Wed – Thu 4pm – 11pm, Fri – Sat 12pm – 11pm & Sun 12pm – 9pm

The Old House is a wonderful bar based in Hull’s oldest domestic building, known for its delicious food, friendly service and cosy atmosphere. Belonging to the Shoot The Bull family, The Old House prides themselves on supporting great local suppliers to offer some of the freshest produce available.

The Old House’s à la carte menu includes some Sunday favourites such as Yorkshire Free Range Chicken Schnitzel, Fish & Chips, Rare Breed Beef Pie, Yorkshire Sausages & Mash, and Potato Gnocchi.

It is highly rated and won a Traveller’s Choice award on TripAdvisor. The Sunday roast, mussels, belly pork and fish are particularly popular.

Larkin’s Bar

48 Newland Ave, Hull

Open Mon – Sun 12pm – 10pm

Larkin’s Bar is a staple to the Newland Avenue ecosystem. It’s fantastic for drinks, food and generally a great time. Plus if you’re lucky, you may spot a market in it’s beer garden. In-fact, it’s one of our favourite beer garden’s in the city.

Larkin’s is cosy, with courteous staff and generous portions. It also won a Traveller’s Choice award on TripAdvisor. The bar serves an incredible Sunday carvery and according to WhatsOnHub fans, it has some of the smoothest and most delicious mashed potatoes ever.

Plus WhatsOnHub’s very own vegetarian hero, Jack Bell, vouches for Larkin’s veggie substitutes for the carvery including meat-free sausages and vegetarian gravy.

Rupert & Darwin

74 Princes Ave, Hull

Open Wed – Thu 5pm – 8:45pm, Fri & Sat 11am – 2pm & 5pm – 8:45pm, & Sun 12pm – 5pm

Located down Hull’s ever so popular Princes Ave, Rupert and Darwin is a great place to visit on a Sunday. Rupert and Darwin is well known for its exceptional beef, hake and Sunday lunch. It serves simple food which is beautifully cooked and is also home to Hull’s first Enomatic wine machine. The restaurant has consistently excellent reviews so it’s sure to be a winner.

On a Sunday, the restaurant offers two courses for £17.50 and three courses for £22.50. If you’re a carnivore, there’s Roast Topside of Waterford Farm Beef, Roast Herb-Fed Chicken, Roast & Breaded Plaice. If you’re a veggie you’re going to have to settle for a Mushroom Risotto.

Rupert and Darwin also offers a range of starters and desserts to fill up that second or third course.

The Whittington & Cat

Commercial Rd, Hull

Open Mon – Thu 4pm – 10pm & Fri – Sun 12pm – 10pm

An historical pub close to Hull marina, The Whittington & Cat serves quality traditional food at a reasonable price. If you’re looking for a decent Sunday lunch in a relaxed and friendly environment near some of Hull’s top tourist attractions then The Whittington & Cat is for you.

After becoming an internet sleuth to find their actual menu (turns out it’s buried in their Facebook page and not on their website) it’s easy to see why The Whittington & Cat is such a Hull hit with a wide range of courses to fit anyone’s expectations on a Sunday. It’s good value too with a full Sunday roast at just £6.95.

Haven Arms

Havenside, Hedon

Open Mon – Wed & Sat 11am – 5pm, Thu 9am – 5pm, Fri 11am – 1am & Sun 11am – 10:30pm

This pub is a WhatsOnHub fan favourite because of its amazing Sunday carvery. It’s also well known for its delectable steak, pork and fish and chips. To top it off, Haven Arms won a Traveller’s Choice award on TripAdvisor. Haven Arms is well worth the drive and just had to be included in this list.

Unlike The Whittington & Cat, Haven Arms does have a menu on their website. Unfortunately that menu is from Christmas 2018 (do you remember Christmas 2018? It feel like a lifetime ago). A quick Facebook search shows that a Sunday roast is available with a choice of Beef, Pork, Turkey, Gammon, Lamb, or Chicken with ‘loads of fresh veg and homemade Yorks Puds’.

The Duke of York, Skirlaugh

Main Road, Skirlaugh, Hull

Open Wed – Sun (Various opening times)

The Duke of York has been known for it’s excellent Sunday roast for many years now and the quality is still there in 2020. Another historical pub with a great selection of beer and wine, and it has an incredible comfort food menu, with an almost perfect Sunday roast!

Tomahawk Steakhouse, Beverley

17 Flemingate, Beverley

Tomahawk Steakhouse is a newcomer to the East Yorkshire restaurant scene. It only opened in Beverley not long before the lockdown but we’ve already had our readers recommend it for our list. It’s getting rave reviews and as a quality steakhouse, the roast beef looks incredible.

The Lodge

Sutton Park Golf Course, Saltshouse Road, Sutton, Hull
