Lockdown Update: What’s Reopened Around Hull Today

It’s been a tough old start to 2021. But things are looking up today with the second phase of the roadmap out of lockdown happening today.

This is really exciting news for Hull as it’s the biggest change so far with so many ‘normal’ things finally coming back in some form such as shops, swimming and restaurants! Here’s the full detail of what’s reopening around Hull from today.

Shopping

The shops in St Stephen’s will reopen on Monday 12th April (photo from 2015)

No longer is shopping restricted to just supermarkets and online deliveries. All your favourite retail stores have reopened again so you can browse in clothes and shoe shops again, pick up some sports gear and check out some tech before you buy it.

The three main shopping centres in Hull city centre have remained open for a very limited number of stores selling essential items during this lockdown. Many more shops in St Stephen’s, Princes Quay and Prospect Shopping Centre are now back open.

Restaurants on the terraces in St Stephen’s haven’t been able to open for outdoor dining today unfortunately as the centre is under cover so their ‘outdoor’ spaces technically aren’t outdoors. And the indoor attractions like Fun Station, Gravity and Reel Cinema aren’t able to reopen today. They’ll only be allowed to reopen in another 5 weeks (17 May) should the decline in coronavirus cases continue.

All the retail parks like Kingston, St Andrew’s Quay, Anlaby and Kingswood will no doubt be busier with shops like Argos and Matalan reopening. Shops at Flemingate in Beverley have also reopened.

Hair and Beauty

That much needed hair cut will finally be allowed to happen this week! Hallelujah!

Barbers, hair dressers and beauty salons will be able to open with safety measures in place. If you haven’t booked already, pick up the phone quick because they’re likely to be bursting for the next few weeks.

And the news gets better… it’s not just the essential beauty that reopens. Fancy a much-needed massage? You’ll be able to book one of those in too!

Outdoor attractions & libraries

William’s Den in North Cave will be reopening their outdoor play area and grounds from Monday

If you’re like me, you’ve been really looking forward to Hull and East Yorkshire’s many attractions reopening. This week will see the return of outdoor attractions only, so those museums, galleries and indoor fun places have to stay closed for a little longer unfortunately. Libraries across Hull & East Yorkshire are a slight exception to the outdoor rule however. Hull and East Riding Council’s have both confirmed their libraries and community centres have now reopened.

Outdoor fun places such as William’s Den have announced they’ll be reopening their outdoor fun and woodlands from Thursday 15th. Country houses like Sewerby Hall have had their gardens open for a couple of weeks already, but now the animal farm/zoo will be open as well as outdoor seating for the café. This is the same at Sledmere House who also have their adventure park reopening. Burton Constable Hall have also opened their grounds.

East Park on Holderness Road has been open during the latest lockdown but only for the grounds and playground. It’sThe zoo (Animal Education Centre) has announced it will reopen on Wednesday 14 April for online bookings only. Full details and how to book here.

Theme Parks

A bit further from home… Theme parks can reopen from Monday. We don’t have any theme parks in East Yorkshire. One of the closest ones to Hull is probably Flamingo Land in Malton, North Yorkshire which takes around 1hr – 1hr, 15 mins to reach by car. It’ll also be opening it’s zoo.

For the under 10s, Diggerland in Castleford is less than an hour away, and Sundown Adventure Land in Retford is around 1hr 20mins away from Hull. Both of these will also be opening their gates for the first time since November. Only outdoor rides and attractions within each theme park will be open, so make sure you check on their websites for exact details before you go.

Swimming Pools

Now this is one that will get the kids excited! Two weeks ago, outdoor pools were allowed to reopen. But from today, all indoor pools including Woodford, Ennerdale, and Albert Avenue will reopen. East Riding Council will also be opening all of their pools which include Beverley, Haltemprice, Bridlington, and Hornsea.

It’s looking like any water slides and splash areas will remain closed however. We had confirmation from East Riding Leisure in Bridlington today that they won’t be opening theirs so it’s likely others will be the same. They have said they’re hoping to reopen them on the next phase of the roadmap on 17 May.

Gyms

If your home fitness workout has taken a bit of a nose-dive this last few months, don’t worry. Your local gym has been able to reopen early doors this morning.

All of Hull’s major gyms have confirmed they’ve now reopened. Here’s the list I managed to track down:

  • Hull Leisure Centres – Ennerdale, Woodford, Albert Ave and Costello
  • PureGym at Anlaby Retail Park,
  • JD Gym off Clough Road,
  • David Lloyd Fitness in Kingswood,
  • Xercise4Less on Clough Road,
  • Planet Gym on Bundell’s Corner in Hull city centre and at North Point Shopping Centre in Bransholme,
  • Nuffield Health at Kingston Park (behind Odeon), and
  • Fit24 now on Prospect Street in Hull city centre as well as Hessle (old Lidl across from ASDA)

Outdoor ‘Al-Fresco’ Dining

The beautiful Al Fresco dining area created by Holiday Inn at Hull Marina

Let’s hope the weather stays pleasant this week because the majority of restaurants around Hull have created Al Fresco dining spaces in order to accommodate as many customers as they can during these next 5 weeks.

I’m sure it’s going to be fun and it’ll be nice to sit and have a meal again. The rule of six will or two households will apply. Like in the summer last year, you’ll have to check in with the NHS app or the restaurant’s own track and trace. Except all diners over 16 have to provide details this time, rather than just one diner per group like before. It’s all table service wherever you go so you’ll only be able to leave the table for toilet break.

We’ve put together this list of The Best Outdoor Dining Spots Around Hull that you really need to check out!

Beer Gardens

Larkin’s Bar on Newland Avenue will be opening their beautiful beer garden from Monday

Now this is the one that most people have been waiting for… going for a drink with friends! This is without doubt, the most ‘normal’ thing that’s come back so far. People have really missed the social element of going for drinks with friends. Like restaurants, it will be table service only. Please do be careful though and keep your distance.

Outdoor Events

I think we’re all looking forward to events coming back. In the next five weeks, only outdoor events can take place such as drive-in cinemas. We’ve not been alerted to any of these coming to our area in these next five weeks though and all the summer music events that might be back this year, aren’t until later in the year when hopefully things will be back to normal. So yes, no big impact on us right now, but you never know.

Holidays

Bridlington is a great place for a quick getaway

Self-contained accommodation holiday resorts and parks are allowed to reopen now. So that includes places like caravan parks, campsites, lodges etc… anywhere where you get your own place basically.

And the UK is full of places like that fortunately and most are based around our beautiful coastlines and beaches. Hotels will be able to open up on the next phase in May and with it looking more and more likely that holidays abroad will be off this year, it’s time to start looking at some of the most beautiful places you can holiday in the UK.
