December is upon us and what a year it has been. If you’re one of the millions who decided to put up their Christmas trees early, then this is the list for you – and even if you didn’t, you can get in on the festive spirit too.

Here, I’ve put together a list of the top 10 Christmas movies for you to enjoy this festive season – and where you can check them out.

Home Alone

Where to watch: Disney+

Home Alone is an absolute Christmas classic anchored by a now iconic performance from Macaulay Culkin. The cartoonish violence has dated the film a little but it doesn’t take away from what is, and always will be, a Christmas treat.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

Where to watch: Disney+

Not the best sequel out there, but Home Alone 2 is still an enjoyable film that again features a great performance from Macaulay Culkin. Featuring a now infamous cameo from 45th POTUS himself, Donald Trump, Lost in New York has all the festive sweetness you could possibly want.

Elf

Where to watch: Amazon Prime/Apple TV

Who hasn’t seen Elf? Arguably Will Ferrell’s most iconic film performance, Buddy the Elf just makes you feel great and if you’re feeling a little “humbug” this year (and who would blame you), it’s sure to get you into the festive spirit.

Miracle on 34th Street

Where to watch: Amazon Prime/Apple TV

Richard Attenborough is probably the best on-screen Santa Claus ever put to film, and Mara Wilson is arguably the cutest kid of the 90s, so you can imagine just how great Miracle on 34th Street is with these two 90s heavyweights on the cast list. Super sweet, emotional and nicely filmed, it’s a perfect festive treat.

The Polar Express

Where to watch: Amazon Prime/Sky Store

Despite the creepy animation style used when motion capture was still in its relative infancy, The Polar Express is an enjoyable festive flick for all the family to enjoy. Also featuring some really stellar voice work from the legend that is Tom Hanks.

Die Hard

Where to watch: Now TV/Amazon Prime

Die Hard is absolutely a Christmas film and one that I always roll out over the festive period. Released way back in 1988, it remains Bruce Willis’ most iconic performance and probably in the top 5 of Alan Rickman roles too. If you haven’t checked this one out, it’s the perfect antidote to the often saccharine movies associated with Christmas.

Krampus

Where to watch: Netflix

A horror film on this list? Absolutely – Krampus is one of the best horror films in recent years, delivered with a deliciously devilish side order of comedic horror (there are murderous gingerbread men for goodness sake), it’s a must watch for those who are fans of the genre.

Love Actually

Where to watch: Now TV/Sky Store

Richard Curtis is a name synonymous with the romantic comedy and Love Actually is probably his most recognised film. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant to name but a few, this should be one at the top of your list.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Where to watch: Disney+

Whether you view The Nightmare Before Christmas as a festive film or a Halloween movie depends on your personal point of view, but either way, this is an incredible film from director Tim Burton. It’s an incredible feat of film-making with beautiful visuals and an intriguing (if very creepy) story and voice work.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Where to watch: Now TV/Sky Store

There are numerous Grinch movies out there, but Jim Carrey’s 2000 outing as the titular character is by far the best. A great movie to enjoy with all the family, and the perfect one to round out this list.

There we have it, 10 Christmas films to enjoy this festive season. What’s your favourite flick to switch on over December?
