A local training provider has joined forces with the Hull Maritime project to offer a new ‘Maritime Futures’ training programme for young people in Hull who aspire to work at sea.

A decision record published today, Wednesday 2 June, confirms the appointment.

East Coast Maritime Training, who specialises in delivering in training within fishing and offshore industries will deliver the ‘Maritime Futures’ programme which will offer 100 young people, aged 16-25 and the unemployed the chance to complete the recognised training and develop the right skills.

The intensive course is designed to support those who are looking to start their career in the fishing or offshore sectors, whether that is on oil rigs, the fast growing wind farms or  the fishing industry. The recognised training aims to ensure that 75 per cent of those completing the course secure employment within 12 months of completion.

Thanks to funding awarded to the Hull Maritime Foundation from the Trinity House Maritime Charity (THMC), the Hull Maritime project is able to offer this vocational training with input and first-hand knowledge from a number of former trawlermen offering young people a real insight to working in these industries.

Councillor Daren Hale, Leader of Hull City Council and responsible for Economic Investment and Regeneration, said: “We are delighted to be working with East Coast Maritime Training, specialists in delivering high quality training in this specialised field.

“The Hull Maritime project is all about offering opportunities, investing in our future and developing skills within the city and this training programme is just one of the ways in which we will do that.”

The first cohort of training will get underway in the summer.
