Hull New Theatre to Debut Inclusive Online Theatre Experience

The weather outside may be frightful, but a new multi-sensory theatre project from Concrete Youth and Hull New Theatre is quite delightful.

Winter Wonderland, a pre-recorded theatrical production which debuts online on Friday 18 December from 4pm, has been specifically created for those with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) whilst also appealing to a mainstream family audience.

Concrete Youth Artistic Director, Daniel Swift said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Hull New Theatre on this project. People with profound and multiple learning disabilities, sadly, do not have regular access to culture at the best of times. This situation has only worsened throughout the pandemic. Winter Wonderland will enable our audience to access a fully inclusive, multi-sensory show from the comfort of their home.”

The show, which explores themes of friendship, teamwork and asking for help, sees the audience recruited as ‘winterns’ to gather household objects in a bid to help Jack Frost and the Snow Queen to fix the snow machine and save winter.

Originally designed as an ‘in person’ experience, the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has seen the company adapt to the current climate. Instead of a physical journey through the wintery landscape, ‘winterns’ will now be guided through the adventure via a pre-recorded performance that they will access digitally online.

This is the first time Hull New Theatre has been involved in an initiative of this kind and reflects the company’s commitment to nurture emerging talent alongside large-scale touring productions whilst making culture more accessible.

A Hull New Theatre spokesperson said: “We are thrilled to be supporting Concrete Youth with their latest project Winter Wonderland. The work that they are doing to allow those with PMLD to access our programme and spaces is hugely important as we strive for a more inclusive industry.”

Tickets for Winter Wonderland are available online at www.hulltheatres.co.uk. Links to the production will be sent to ticketholders on Friday 18 December 2020.
